Charanjit Singh Hayer [commonly known as CS] was born in Kakamega, Kenya in July 1946 and is happily married with four daughters.
After completing his secondary education in Kisumu, Kenya, he went on to study in the United Kingdom where he graduated with a BSc – Civil Engineering in 1971. He began his professional career in 1972 as an engineer in Britain, Sweden and East Africa for a period of 5 years. After establishing a sound practical grounding in Civil Engineering projects with an internationally recognised company Molem construction, he returned to Kenya joining his fathers’ business.
In 1977 in conjunction with his younger brothers, CS founded M/S Hayer Bishan Singh & Sons Ltd [HBSS] and today presides as Group Chairman of a multitude of successful and diversified companies in the engineering, construction, manufacturing, travel and tourism sectors throughout Kenya. The core civil engineering and construction business provides the platform for diversification into new sectors. HBSS has established itself as the foremost civil engineering company in Kenya having completed many projects across Kenya, Uganda and recently Sudan. The Hayer Group of companies employs over 1000 people across its various business interests.
CS is a respected member of the Sikh community in Kenya and has contributed significantly to the prosperity, growth and social fabric of Kisumu in particular where he resides. He has held prominent positions as Chairman of various social and sports clubs such as Nyanza Hockey Association and Simba Club. CS has taken particular interest in the advancement of local educational and social projects where he has contributed generously through various charity groups. He has also been a past Chairman of the Lions Club of Kisumu and held zone and regional Chairs for district 411.
Enhancing his reputation as an entrepreneurial, influential and insightful business man, he was the founding member of Kenya India Chamber of Commerce, a corporate member of Agricultural Society of Kenya, Kisumu and member of the Kenya association of Manufacturers.
CS has a strong commitment to humanitarian causes and is a Life Member of the Red Cross Society, Board Director of Sabatia Eye Hospital and a member of the National Disaster Committee of Kenya. As a responsible and caring employer, CS has established a Cooperative Society for the welfare of his group company employees. He is influential and well connected throughout Kenya displaying a passion for Kenya’s economic and social progress.
In the Sikh community, CS is respected and is often consulted in providing advice and counsel to the community in a range of social and cultural matters. He has been a Chairman of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Sikh Temple in Kisumu, Kenya and is an Executive Committee Member of the Sikh Supreme Council of Kenya. He is also a member of the Guru Nanak Haramba Dispensary which provides medical assistance on a subsidised basis.
He is committed to interfaith harmony and is also an Executive Committee Member of the Hindu Council of Kenya, Kisumu. He is a member of the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha [GNNSJ], a charitable organisation based in Birmingham, UK. He has attended several interfaith conferences as part of this organisation headed by the distinguished Bhai Mohinder Singh Ji.
CS’s accomplishments as a successful businessman, caretaker of social and community affairs will bring extensive and valuable experience to the position as one of the Trustees of Religions for Peace.
