A powerful two-day event, jointly organized by Religions for Peace and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), commenced this morning in the historically significant city of Gernika, Spain. The initiative marks the launch of  “A Call for Peace, the End of Wars and Respect for International Law”.

The opening of the event included a poignant moment of silence called for by Miguel Moratinos, High Representative of the Alliance of Civilizations, to honor the memory of His Holiness Pope Francis. Mr. Moratinos described the late Pope as “a beacon of universal love and a voice for peace in a world too often divided.” Pope Francis, a fervent advocate for peace and a strong supporter of international institutions, was invoked at the start of the proceedings.

Following this tribute, a vital round table discussion took place on the theme of “Interfaith Dialogue: The Role of Religious Leaders and Faith Actors in Fostering the Call for Peace, Mutual Respect and Understanding.” Ms. Nihal Saad of UNAOC underscored the significant influence of religious leaders, stating that they “have the power to convey the messages of peace, understanding, mutual respect, and dialogue. Dialogue continues to be the cornerstone of religious actors around the world.”

Dr. Francis Kuria, Secretary General of Religions for Peace

Dr. Francis Kuria, Secretary General of Religions for Peace, emphasized the enduring relevance of religious communities, noting that “today, 85% of the world’s population identifies as religious, and religious communities continue to be centers of unity and togetherness.” He further asserted that religious leaders are “trusted moral influencers, harbingers of peace in times of conflict” and hold a “unique position as changemakers in both their local communities and on the global stage.”

Highlighting Religions for Peace’s extensive work of over 50 years, Dr. Kuria declared that “sustainable peace is possible when religious leaders create coalitions that strive towards a shared sacred wellbeing.”

Echoing this commitment, the Mufti of Sarajevo, Dr. Nezdad Grabus, stressed the need for both prayer and concrete action, particularly directed towards politicians who are “responsible for security and for peace.” He urged Imams, priests, and rabbis to extend their concern beyond their own communities and speak out about the suffering of others, stating powerfully, “If we speak about other human beings only as our enemies, we will never resolve any problem among us.”

Rabbi Dalia Levinsohn, President of the Jewish Community Council of Barcelona, offered a profound understanding of peace, stating, “peace, Shalom is not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of harmony, respect, and cooperation. Peace is built through action, dialogue, and the recognition of humanity in each person.”

Rev. Kosho Niwano, president designate of Rissho Kosei Kai, delivered a compelling message that was “a call for urgent reform of power and policy-all grounded in a culture of dialogue, mutual dignity and moral responsibility.” Rev. Niwano emphasized a practical approach to peace, asserting that “Peace must be lived, embodied through systems that reward cooperation over domination, through education that nurtures empathy, and through leadership that upholds dignity over division.”

The Bishop of Bilbao, His Excellency Joseba Segura Etxezarraga, reminded attendees of Pope Francis’s teaching that “peace isn’t separate from justice, from caring for the poor and caring for our common home.” He also drew attention to the significance of the date, recalling that April 26 marks the 88th anniversary of the bombing of Guernika, “a Day of Remembrance for the innocent victims of violence, but also a Day of Hope for those who choose to risk for peace.”

The resounding applause from the diverse religious leaders and participants underscored their shared dedication to becoming active and tangible builders of peace in the world.
