A Conversation with Ms. Saskia Schellekens, Senior Adviser on Culture at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and Coordinator to the Executive Secretariat UN Interagency Task Force on Religion and Sustainable Development

Ms. Saskia Schellekens, UN Interagency Task Force on Religion and Sustainable Development June 25, 2020

In Ms. Saskia Schellekens’ recent work at UNFPA, it has been critical that all partners in the international community are mobilized around the COVID-19 global pandemic. She has seen a particularly positive impact on these efforts by faith-based organizations and religious leaders who can meet communities and people on the ground.

Community members often see their religious leaders as credible and trusted voices in a way they don’t always see their governments. “Faith leaders are trusted and have a natural connection with their communities, they are sought after for advice,” explains Ms. Schellekens. “While much of this advice is spiritual, providing this support creates opportunities for faith leaders to ensure that accurate information on COVID-19 also reaches the people.”

This episode of “How Faith Matters” explores how UNFPA’s work is aided by faith actors who can help support the spiritual needs of their communities, while also helping implement important life-sustaining initiatives around COVID-19, gender equality, women’s health and the environment.
