After beginning his religious studies in Baghdad, al-Hafeed was unable to continue under Saddam Hussein’s regime and subsequently completed a degree in Islamic jurisprudence in Pakistan.

Al-Hafeed gained international prominence through expressing the voice of Iraqi Kurds in numerous interfaith dialogue events, and he was subsequently named an Honorary President of Religions for Peace. He has since established himself in national politics by representing the Ulama Kurdish Union.
