Religions for Peace, as part of the world of faith-inspired work for global justice, has lost a legend – Dr. Agnes Abuom – a Kenyan citizen of the world.

A tireless worker for many – women, children, people living with disabilities, communities and nations from the south and north, Dr. Abuom was also a deep believer in the justice and mercy of the Divine.

As a woman, she argued and worked tirelessly for all women. As a believer, she upheld, lived, and honoured the values of all faiths. As a Kenyan, she held her continent, and each corner of the world, close to her heart.

As a mentor to many women and men in the global multi faith movement, Dr. Abuom taught me the value of pride based on the humility of giving, not the arrogance of taking. She was the living exemplar of what it means to be inclusive of different opinions, to seek to be fair, and to unfailingly be kind.

Our world of ‘religions’, gender justice, environmental justice and many more, will miss the amazing grace of Agnes Abuom. But her legacy lives on through all those she mentored, and was an example for. May she rest in peace.

-Professor Dr. Azza Karam, Secretary General of Religions for Peace
