Religions for Peace Urges for Multi-religious Solidarity to Uphold Human Dignity for All in India

As members of a global community, working together to realise peaceful coexistence, Religions for Peace (RfP) is deeply concerned by reports of escalating interreligious violence in New Delhi and other parts of India these past weeks, in relation to the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in December 2019.

The passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 has stoked anger among many human rights actors, and raised fears among minority communities.

RfP’s global multi-religious membership stand in solidarity with peaceful attempts to condemn discrimination, counter hate speech and/or mobilise against incitement to violence.

Our brothers and sisters in India are working to counter incitement, heal survivors of violence and secure peace in their own local communities. We salute these efforts to secure human dignity.

RfP recognizes the heritage of India’s peaceful coexistence and democratic institutions which embrace a significant diversity of peoples.

In that regard, India’s example is a source of instruction, inspiration and geopolitical significance not only for the region, but for the world.

As such, RfP calls upon all religious, political and social actors to raise their collective voice and power of solidarity, to protect the rights and dignity of all.

We remember at this critical hour, the inspiring words of Mahatma Gandhi, “what we do today determines our tomorrow.”
